Boots

There are two types of boot:

* Leather

* Fabric

Leather boots are very durable and comfortable. They give a lot of support, but are not naturally waterproof. They need to have a lining, such as Gore-Tex, in order for them to be classed as being waterproof. Waxing them thoroughly will help.

Fabric boots are generally lighter and have less support, but they are not waterproof. Some models come with a Gore-Tex (or similar) lining that ensures complete waterproofing.

Gaiters: A gaiter is a piece of material, wrapped around your lower leg, that keeps the mud and wet off. They are very useful when walking in the damp/mud but when there is no need for over trousers. Remember to put overtrousers OVER the top of gaiters, otherwise the water will run into your boot!

Socks: Socks need to cushion feet, provide insulation and allow sweat to pass though them. For this reason, many socks now come with a Coolmax lining.

Cotton socks must be avoided, particularly if your boot has a Gore-Tex (or similar) lining.

Footcare: Prevention is better than cure for blisters. Correct boots and socks are essential. Compeed or Micropor are good if you do get blisters. Please tell someone if you think you have blisters. They must be treated ASAP. Toe nails should be cut just before expedition.
